Listening and Speaking (video 376.1-376.11)     This teaching case illustrates how teachers can develop the listening and speaking skills of their ELLs. It follows a university class where teachers are learning about the latest theories and research into what constitutes effective practice. The teaching case also highlights the practice of two effective elementary teachers.

Reading and Writing (376.12-376.21)This teaching case illustrates how teachers can develop the reading and writing skills of their ELLs. It follows a university class where teachers are learning about the latest theories and research into what constitutes effective practice. The teaching case also highlights the practice of four effective elementary and secondary teachers doing such things as: developing vocabulary through root word study; developing 'learning to learn' skills; and teaching the process and skills of writing.>

ELD at Middle School (Overview) (376.22-376.24)   This section focuses on supporting the language development of students at varying levels of proficiency in English Language Development classrooms. The section explores pedagogical strategies supported by theory and research, as well as educational dilemmas, and classroom environments, by highlighting the effective practices of two middle-school teachers. These two classroom examples are placed in the broader context of the challenges students, teachers, and schools face as they work together to support English language learning.

Beginning ELD Level Students (376.25-376.27)   In this section, you will observe as Sofia Moraes delivers a lesson on figurative language to her beginning-level ELLs. This lesson is part of a larger unit that integrates a language arts unit about developing self-expression through writing with a social studies unit on the life of Cesar Chavez.

Intermediate ELD Level Students (376.28-376.30)      In this section, you will observe as Barbara Formoso delivers a lesson on figurative language to her advanced-level ELLs. This lesson is part of a larger unit on self-portraits, which focuses on self-expression through writing memoirs and poems and creating art projects. Ms. Formoso has designed this lesson as an introduction to the concept of figurative language. She will build on this lesson as students continue to learn about figurative language throughout their writing experiences in the unit.

ELD at High School: Teaching Examples (376.31-376.36)   This section focuses on supporting language development for high school ELLs. Teachers using this teaching case will learn about what they need to know and do to support adolescent ELLs' oral language and literacy development at the high school level. Teaching Examples This teaching case illustrates how four teachers develop the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of their English language learners.

ELD at High School: Perspectives  (376.37-376.52)     Education professors, subject-area specialists, district officials, fellow teachers, and others review and comment on the video segments. The goal of these expert commentaries is to highlight examples of effective instruction, consider how effective instruction relates to standards and research, andoffer ideas about how even superb teachers can improve their instruction. Commentaries from several experts are included in this section. This is followed by two student interviews conducted by their teacher.
